Crystalline

These richly ornate crystalline glazes are just what they sound like—crystals that grow in the glaze during firing. They are gorgeous decorative pieces that make good wedding or anniversary gifts. Not suitable for serving food, these bowls and vases are artisanal ornamental pieces.

Dan recently began trying his hand at crystalline glazes and loved the results but wished that he could see the crystals forming. However, you can’t just look inside the kiln while it’s firing at 2,156 degrees Fahrenheit—the intense light would seriously damage your eyes. So, Dan designed a process to photograph the crystals as they are growing inside the kiln. Learn more about that process here.
